In Honor, an Essay in Celebration Rules of the Design, TPGII... On the 2nd Anniversary On the 2nd Anniversary On the Road Two years? It's only been two years? Wow... |
Seems like I've learned more in two years about this game than I have in many more years about others. Maybe I'm just, um, special... When Al Scales first launched this page, I was pleased to find it because it was a place where I could find new scenarios to play. It was also a place where I could upload my own scenarios for other people to play. That was quite a concept... publish my stuff.... cool...! Then Al turned it over to Scot, and, while I could still upload and download scenarios, another dimension was added - I could discuss some of the finer points of the game with other players. I could ask questions, get answers, toss in a few what ifs, have them tossed back at me, and the whole thing got very interactive. And I learned. As the page expanded, and as I went from being General 14 to General 14,761 to access the page, my scope of the game increased dramatically. And I made a few friends along the way. If someone had asked me two years ago, "Jim, you think you'll ever have a website? And if you ever do, do you think there might be a picture of the host of the TPGII website holding a bass on it?", I would have looked at them with one of those 'when did they let you out?' looks. But, both happened...(and rumor has it they're letting me out soon...) The TPGII game page is more than just a place to post scenarios and download new ones now. It's a meeting place, a place to share ideas. Yes, the glue that holds it together is our mutual interest in this game. But it's just a game. What's far more interesting is the people who play the game. What Scot has done with this site is enable those people to interact. And that's fascinating. Games tend to take on the personalities of their designers. I think that we've found a wealth of different personalities and games through this medium. I don't think that the designers of the game, Andy in particular, ever thought that it would result in, dare I say it, a community. Well, it did. And in this General's book, that's a good thing. So, yes, I enjoy playing TPGII. Yes, I enjoy designing games. But what I really like is swapping war stories with my fellow generals via this...this... THIS! May our community continue to expand with a wealth of new ideas from those we know and those we haven't met yet. This has been and continues to be an endless source of entertainment and enjoyment for this general. And it's been and will be a great deal of fun to participate. Play and be played. Then debated. Everyone needs a little diversion now and then. A good battle is one of mine. Thanks, Scot! General "If there is no place to go, it is 'fatal' terrain." Girard quoting Sun Tzu. |
